Bad Numbers
Thank you for reading this – and be thankful that you can. Several million Americans would be unable to do so because they lack reading skills.
In a recent issue of Time magazine, I came across these alarming statistics:
  • Out of ten American kids, four haven’t acquired basic reading skills by 4th grade.
(Source: National Assessment of Educational Progress, 2024)
  • One third of 8th graders are reading below grade level.
  • In a reading test, the average 12th grader scores three points lower than his or her classmates did in 2019. Compared to 1992, they score ten points lower.
  • According to the National Center for Education Statistics, roughly one-fourth of 16-24 year-olds are functionally illiterate.
  • Folks 20-34 years of age spend ten minutes a day – or less – reading something for pleasure.
It’s easy to see why when we consider that reading requires the use of imagination to convert symbols on pages into people, places, things, emotions and human interaction. Why go to all that trouble when everything we have interest in is available in picture form on an endless variety of illuminated screens?
Just this: When a 400-page novel is produced as a feature film, what gets left out? What we don’t see in the movie are the back-stories of the characters, their personal histories, the emotions that drive them, the subtle shadings of language and the complex plot twists that would take too long to present in film. The book is nearly always better.
Party Time!
As much as I love writing, I find equal pleasure in editing the work of others – anything and everything from a simple business card to a full-length novel.
I recently worked on a party invitation that needed a bit of polish. Written for a Florida condo community’s annual holiday bash, all of the words were there – just not in the most effective order.
A few minor matters needed adjustment as well. The choice of entrée wasn’t entirely clear; neither were the details regarding adult beverages. A couple of lines seemed unnecessary. With a little attention to spelling and grammar, it was done in less than an hour.
Now it’s easier to understand, hopefully more effective – and a bit shorter as well.
What can I help you with?

Excitement!
Excitement for me, anyway, because I’ve just completed a first draft of my new novel titled, Billy.
The main character is a boy genius, born with an IQ not measurable by standard means. As he breezes his way through public school and college by skipping grades, he discovers his true purpose in life and helps thousands of troubled people find a measure of peace in their lives.
I started as a business writer half a century ago, but fiction – just makin’ stuff up – is much more fun!
Planned for publication in the spring, I’m having difficulty in designing a cover for the book. If you have any suggestions, please let me hear from you!

Mr. Moog and His Magical Music Machine
Over the last sixty years, the electronic keyboard has become as much a part of the music scene as the electric guitar. Few music lovers, however, may know of its origin and history.
Invented in 1964 by engineer Robert Moog, the synthesizer could create new and unusual musical tones not possible with traditional instruments. It gained a major boost in popularity in 1968 with a best-selling album by Wendy Carlos titled, Switched-on Bach, a selection of J. S. Bach’s most familiar compositions played with a Moog Synthesizer.
In the late 1960s, synthesizers were added to the instrumental mixes of popular groups such as the Doors, the Grateful Dead, the Rolling Stones, the Beatles and others.

What’s On the Menu
at King Street Recording Company?

By Emmet Robinson

As I was heading down the street to the Post Office, a passerby stopped me and asked, “What do you do up there in your studio?”

Interesting question.

Returning from my errand, I got to thinking about an answer.

Over the course of an hour or so, I’d developed an interesting list. So, after many years of continuous evolution, based largely on client requests, this is what’s on the menu.

What’s New?

Al Bien, a Chester County musician known as an excellent songwriter, has written a beautiful, heartfelt poem in commemoration of the birthday of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King. I was moved to tears by the skill with which he described our colorful history and the powerful impact left by Dr. King’s untiring efforts toward a more fair and just society. It had been a long time since I enjoyed an original poem so much.

How It Looks From Here

We live in interesting times, where the only constant we can depend on is change.

In the early days of the American recording industry, for example, songwriters and musicians eager for fame and fortune would seek recording contracts with major record companies as their pathway to success.

In a related effort, talent scouts would scour venues where live music was being performed and gauge the levels of audience responses. When they found acts that were popular and seemed to have potential, they would offer them recording contracts. Once someone signed, the company would invest in the new artist by providing support in a variety of ways. Although not every act would go on to be successful, there were more winners than losers, and record companies would grow to be large, wealthy and powerful – all by making a investments of time and money with no guarantee of a return.

What’s New?
Hot Off the Press
The outdoor adventures of Bob, the Pennsylvania Wildlife Control officer, continue to make interesting, amusing and sometimes exciting reading. His well-crafted stories are easy to edit, just needing just an occasional minor touch-up.

His latest adventure involved saving a large dog that had fallen through the ice on a frozen lake. The details of how Bob prepared for the rescue, ventured forth on thin ice, and nearly needed rescuing himself, make an exciting read.

Bob’s growing collection of recollections of law and order in the great outdoors holds promise of becoming a slender book. Stay tuned.

Distinctive Style

Ethan’s been back in the studio, this time with an unusual arrangement of an operatic classic. This legendary aria Nessun dorma, which he sings softly, offers a pleasantly different presentation. Harmonica in hand, he adds occasional fills of complex arpeggios that are truly impressive. A pleasure to work with, he’s always very well prepared and never requires more than three takes.
